5 Reasons to Travel with Your Autistic Child
Updated: Mar 9
Are you a little worried about trying to travel with your autistic child? Are you concerned about traveling to a nearby city? Another state? Or halfway across the world? I can understand because I had the same feelings when my son was diagnosed with autism. However, I want you to know that traveling with a person with autism is completely possible! I believe that travel is for everyone!
There is so much to see and do in this world, as well as so many things to experience. Your autistic child will soak most of it in while embracing it at the same time. Yes, you will need to do a little extra work before your vacation to get them used to visiting a new destination. You will need to make sure they understand what to expect when you are away from home. But every trip will get easier and easier, as your child gets used to new things and truly begins to thrive. When you are feeling a little lost planning a trip I'm here to help!
5 Reasons to Travel with Your Autistic Child
1. Practical Application of Work Done in Therapy Sessions
Your autistic child works hard during their therapy sessions like OT and speech. And you work hard to support them along the way. However, when you stay home, you are giving your child limited experiences when it comes to putting those therapy sessions to work!
When you choose to travel with your child, you are allowing them to use their newfound skills in a new environment. And since they will be around new people, they will get to practice what they have been learning while conversing with others.
2. Spreads Awareness of Neurodiversity
As you go out into your community, you may find yourself coming across people who have no idea how a child with autism acts. As you travel to other parts of the world, you will notice that awareness of neurodiversity is even more limited. But the more you travel, the more you share this neurodiversity awareness that everyone needs to know.
3. Helps Build Self-Confidence Which Leads to Self-Advocacy
An autistic child can lack self-confidence if they are not given a chance to build up their confidence levels. Traveling can help boost confidence levels in any child. And the more confident a person is, the more apt they are to advocate for themselves now and in the future.
4. Helps Explain and Unpack the World Around Them
It is a little difficult to explain what an attraction looks like over in France or Rome if you are sitting at home. You will also find that it is difficult to explore new cultures and traditions without meeting the local people of other destinations. As you travel the world with your autistic child, you will develop into a global citizen who will love traveling as much as you do! And trust me when I say your autistic child will remember it all!
5. Creates a Unique Environment to Bond as a Family
I have created so many memories with my autistic son, as well as the rest of my family, during our travels. There is nothing better than getting away from all the therapy sessions and other appointments for a few days and getting a break. We concentrate on our family and what we are doing each day.
