One of the best ways to explore Japan is through its world-class train system. In this blog, I’ll walk you through how to purchase and use the Japan Rail (JR) Pass and share additional tips for making the most of your journey.
What Is the Japan Rail Pass?

The Japan Rail Pass is a must-have for travelers looking to explore Japan efficiently and affordably. Available in 7, 14, or 21-day options, this pass provides unlimited access to most JR trains, including the iconic Shinkansen (bullet trains), and select buses and ferries.
You can get the JR Pass here. Booking through this link supports my blog at no extra cost to you.
How to Use the JR Pass
- Purchase & Exchange
- Order your JR Pass online using the link above. You’ll receive an exchange voucher that you can trade for the actual pass at designated JR offices across Japan. Don’t forget your passport—it’s required for verification.
- Making Reservations
- While the JR Pass covers non-reserved seats, I recommend reserving your seats for Shinkansen and limited express trains, especially during busy travel periods. Seat reservations are free for JR Pass holders and can be made at any JR station.
- Using the Pass
- Simply show your JR Pass at the ticket gates. Friendly station staff will manually check your pass and grant you entry.
Important Note: Hakone & Kamakura Are Not Included
While the JR Pass is incredibly versatile, it doesn’t cover every destination. Popular spots like Hakone and Kamakura require separate passes for the Odakyu Rail Lines. You can get the Hakone and Kamakura 3-Day Rail Pass here.
Planning to include Hakone or Kamakura in your itinerary? Let me help you design a seamless travel plan that incorporates these destinations and more.
